Why was Will Smith trying to kill the deer in I am Legend?

Why was Will Smith trying to kill the deer in the movie? He had a whole kitchen full of food..was he just craving fresh meat or did I miss something? At first I thought he was trying to shoot a possible cure at the deer but the gun had bullets in it so was he just hungry?Why was Will Smith trying to kill the deer in I am Legend?
He was eating canned food. And as you can imagine there won't be any fresh meat if there is no one left to catch and butcher the animals. We cannot buy/find any meat or milk related product, or any fresh product for that matter on earth if there is nobody to catch the animals or use the animals. So as a result, he was trying to hunt the deer for fresh meat. That would be a great change after eating canned food or ready prepared food for a long time.Why was Will Smith trying to kill the deer in I am Legend?
it was for meat.... did u see any meat in the kitchen..... i mean he was alone for like 10 years so he didnt really have alot of meat (with the exception of the bacon)......
I first thought that maybe he was attempting to sedate the deer so he could take it back and do some tests on it. But the answers regarding canned food make sense.

Good question. I was thinking the same thing actually. I think it was for hunger. Deer meat. In the kitchen I basically just seen canned food basically. Then do you remember when Anna made Will breakfast and she cooked the bacon ? He was mad and he even said he was saving that.
at first i had no clue,,but i started thinking and it was either for fresh meat to eat,,hehe,,or for fun. you know,,some people hunt for fun,,so yup.that movie was good though ^_^
All he had was canned food...he was eating nothing but vegatables, so was the dog...if you remember he was going to cook deer with the vegatables that he had and also fed to the dog...Look back thru the moive he never went into the Ice Box...meaning he had no meat and no food that needed refrigation...canned food dont need refrigation....neither does bacon...
I think it was becuase he was hungry, and it probably gave him something to do. Killing time and stuff.
He wanted to eat the meat. All he had was canned food. Probably just a lot of beans and Beefaroni. One can only live off canned food for so long.
I don't think he was eating them. I think the deer were carriers of the virus too that's why he was killing them.
