Would the Mosin nagant make a decent deer gun? ?

IM thinking of getting one, and will put a modern scope on it. It fires the 7.62 x 54r.Would the Mosin nagant make a decent deer gun? ?
Ballisticly the 54R is great for any big game (non-dangerous) in N.America. The Mosin-Nagant is rather heavy, and to mount a scope you would need to use a side type mount or a forward Scout type mount on the barrel because there is no room on the receiver to mount bases well. Like most people have said, it will do the job, learn to shoot with the iron sights because mounting and maintaining the zero on a side mount is difficult. The scout scope position would be problematic with the wooden fore end also. For hunting deer you have a lot better options. They sell Stevens, some Savages, Mossberg ATRs and Howa 1500/ Weatherby Vangards for around $300 at Wal-Mart and some better Sporting goods stores.Would the Mosin nagant make a decent deer gun? ?
yes and no. The gun is definitely big enough and well enough built. The problem is it will take some modification to really get it to compare to even a cheap modern bolt action. The price looks good, until you realize by the time you sporterize it, you could have bought a brand new weatherby vanguard or savage or marlin or .... The other problem, do you know what you are looking at. Can you spot a bad bore, a worn throat, or any one of a dozen other things that can ruin accuracy. Many people have bought a worn out surplus gun thinking they could make it shoot all right, only to find out it is indeed worn out. A good Mosin nagant in the right hands is as good of gun as there is, on the other hand, it's probably better left to people with more experience (if you fall into this category, then have at 'er).
MAYBE.

For the average occasional hunter who is not interested in gunsmithing and modifications and tinkering around and just wants a cheap hunting gun, he would be much better off with a used hunting rifle or shotgun in a standard American caliber. Find one that shoots but ain't pretty.

Putting a scope on the Mosin is a challenge. There are plenty of cheap mounts available that do not work. I use a Mosin for pigs using a Scout style forward mount scope and I have about $250 in it but I've done all the work myself. For me it was just a challenge as a Mosin collector, not a way into a hunting rifle.

That said, the 7.62x54r in a soft point like S%26amp;B make makes a fine gun to drop ole Porky and get the bacon.
We know what it is. I use a mosin myself for hunting larger game and I use irons. It was unissued so the barrel was perfect. But it may take a looooong time to sight with the irons like me and if your using a scope you need to buy the kind that one does not need up to you face. I don't know the term but I know what it is. It has enough power to take a moose down, plent for deer. It's in the same power class as 30-06.
it would make a fine deer rifle, especially if you spent about $50 and got a new polymer stock to put on it.

If you are going to mount a scope you will also need a new bolt handle.

learn to shoot the irons... and if you can find 7.62x54R in soft point it will kill deer.

Milsurp FMJ punches right through deer and is not legal to hunt with in many states... your Game and Fish Dept can give you the scoop on that

The mall ninjas will tell you that you need a Hubble brand 250x600 night vision (Col Kink Memorial Version) scope... but most whitetails are killed around 30-50 yards or so
oh yes, the 7.62X54r has been used to hunt every animal in north america, including brown bear.

beautiful cartridge for deer, similar in a lot of ways to the 30-06 and the .308 winchester. good to 500 yards if you want to try it, but 300 yards is as far as I want to risk with any cartridge.
Of course. the 7.62 x 54 nato caliber would make a great deer gun. not to mention how neat it it is to hunt with old military rifles. i have used an sks chambered in 7.62 x 39 to take deer in the past and it did a great job.
With soft point ammo, or good quality JHP handloads, the 7.62x54R makes a great deer gun, elk gun, moose gun, bear gun, really any large game animal that can be found in North America can be taken with this caliber.
i suppose it would, but why not just buy a nice ruger .308 or something like that and quit messing around with those old, iffy antique military antiques.
