I wonder how many US citizens watch films such as U-571, Saving Private Ryan, and the Deer Hunter and...?

...assume the films to factually correct? I always wondered why Americans always seemed to be so ignorant of the world around them and its history-now I know. It's because Hollywood supplies them with all the ';facts'; they needI wonder how many US citizens watch films such as U-571, Saving Private Ryan, and the Deer Hunter and...?
many americans readily believe in most ( not all) of the things fed to them as it's part of their culture to accept that they are always being taught correctly and America is simply the greatest ever nation and swear to the flag etc. many other countries also think of their way of life as the 'only' real and truthful way of life.

by being immersed in so much 'official' and accepted stories they will easily accept without judgement most things offered.

It is not just america whom has this issue. many will believe all they are shown on TV and in most films as factual simply because they are brought up to 'trust' the official offerings of that organisation.

history is always written by teh victor for example and real truths are buried along with the dead.I wonder how many US citizens watch films such as U-571, Saving Private Ryan, and the Deer Hunter and...?
All three of the films you mentioned were fictional. Nobody ever claimed they were true.

Let's compare this to the crockumentaries of Michael Moore, who purports his films to be true, and yet are filled with lie after lie after lie.

I always wondered why leftists always seemed to be so ignorant of the world around them and its history- now I know. It's because they can't tell fact from fiction and believe the kind of nonsense spouted by halfwits like Michael Moore and Sean Penn.
I can't speak for all these films you've listed, But I can speak for the film private Ryan, And confirm that it is very close to being accurate, I know history and people who were there when much of what portrayed in that film happened. The problem isn't with Americans ignorance, But rather your wanting to rewrite history to suit your own beliefs and or agenda . God bless.
The film U571 got a lot ridiculing in the British press because it is a blatant lie it was not US forces that captured a German sub but a Royal Navy Warship, it was reported in the British press that many US WWII vets (the real men who fought, not actors) who saw the film got up and left in disgust because many thought that it ridiculed America.

The world owes America a great debt for their liberty and freedom that is not fully understood and appreciated, but these kinds of films that portray America as all conquering without reference to other nations that took part fighting evil in WWII does not do America any favours today.
I too am dismayed at people who watch movies, blithely, happily unaware that the movie is just riddled with historical inaccuracies.

I'm especially irritated at how we transform certain events into comic book-style tales of good vs evil. Hence, I was happily surprised to see the the new Tom Cruise (one of my least favorite actors) movie doesn't show all Nazis like they are foaming at the mouth and ready to disembowel puppy doggies for fun.

If we don't recognize the good and bad in things like the Nazi regime, we won't learn any lessons about what really made it ultimately evil, nor what elements of it were quite redeemable and commendable.
I have no problem with historical fiction as long as i know what it is. I take no movies to seriously unless it claims to be a documentary and none of the above were ever promoted as such. I'm more irritated that people listen to your dribble and think it's anywhere near accurate. Now THAT'S a lark!
waaaaay too many people. the majority of people I know actually ';learn'; from commercials. It drives me to the point of insanity how easily people just endroctrinate themselves because they just take everything as fact!!

The point that is driving me made right now is the Corn Refiners of America commercials regarding high fructose corn syrup. I seeth with anger when one of those come on.
Why would anyone think any of those movies was factually correct ?

They were not documentaries.

They were movies.

Do you really think people believed thier are space aliens driving taxi cabs in NYC, because they showed them in MNB ?

or that ET came to earth and lived with a 8 yr old ?
What is your Question?

Did these things actually Happen?

Or is it more Hollywood HYpe?

Did Apocalypse now happen? How about Full Metal Jacket?

These Movies awere the way that the Writer saw things during times of a war and by writing them came to grips with in the Words of Marlan Brando in Apocalypse Now '; The Horror,The Horror'; of war.
If I had my way people with such a greed for money who are prepared to sell their country down the river by openly supporting the terrorist enemy, should be put down as traitors. They have absolutely no patriotism and are prepared to sell their souls to the highest bidder.
Probably the same percentage ( but probably not the same pool) of people who accept what Rush Limbaugh says as the truth.

Actually. 1066, 1492, 1588, 1776, 1815, Dec 7, 1943. is about all we are taught in history class. Or at least all we didn't sleep through.
Kind of like how when people watch ';documentaries' like Fahrenheit 911, and Bowling for columbine and assume that they are factually correct instead of edited to project the political and social views of Michael Moore.
i don't know about the other ones but Private Ryan was a good story. I don't really qualify as an American cuz i am an immigrant so i guess that is why i didn't take it literally.

sadly, many do.

good movie though lolz
Those are fiction. BUT in researching Saving Private Ryan, Hanks came upon the true story of Major Winters and ';E company'; and made ';band of Brothers';. I highly seeing that recommend that.
I watched Saving Private Ryan, not the other ones yet. I watch movies for entertainment not for fact gathering. Movies may have some truths in them but that is the least of my worries when watching movies.
interesting question. I don't think just Americans are ignorant to the world around them it is everyone in the world who is ignorant of the world around them. just like you
I don't assume anything made by Hollywood to be factual correct. Its entertainment pure and simple. The last time I saw a movie that came close was Tora,Tora,Tora. And even then some things were not totally correct.
Americans are idiots??? You pompous a@@!!!!! You chose to leave your homeland and go live in Australia and chose NOT to stay and defend your own country. Now who is the idiot?
I was tuning my 1968 Les Paul Custom Sunburst and missed the meaning of your question. I guess you are saying we Americans get our history from movies. Maybe so but the rift of Pride and Joy by SRV is a little more important right now.
Well ya no us dum asz Amrikans cant tel trut frmo realte an ever bodi els is jst so wa mor smertr thn we is aniwa, and we should be listening to an entirely and apparently deliberately misinformed dckhead because?.
Wrong. Hollywood does make movies based on real events, but most people realize that the storylines and a lot of events in the movies are fiction.
Get real Timmy. You just asked another question that stated Farenheit 911 and Syriana as intelligent films. That says a lot, as does this one.
Those are works of historical fiction, not non-fiction. I would hope most people would be able to differentiate between the two.
More people watched the Lord of the Rings and got the same quality of information.
Anyone that uses a movie as a historical reference...is retarded....regardless of their nationality.
Well the scene at the end of Saving Private Ryan sure ain't fake - there were that many deaths that were a result of WWII.
they are movies ,are we not suppose to watch them or something??

are we ignorant becuase we watch movies?

that is a new one from here wow
who you calling ignorant? their just movies.
Just like religion, movies allow people to sit back and have life dictated for them.
hahahh.. sorry, not me..

saving private ryan is a good movie though.

you're bitter.
Movies are movies.
